Road trips are incredibly common in the United States today and have grown in popularity over the past four decades with the development of motor vehicles. People decide to go on a road trip on a whim or sometimes plan them in advance. Road trips are used to travel cross country, to another local state, to go on vacation close to home or to just have fun. Road trips help people see the country at their own pace and they can stop anywhere they wish. When on a plane, train, or bus people cannot stop whenever or wherever they want. And, they can't see the ground from an airplane until they are landing.

Cross country trips are a great way for people to bond with family members, friends, and their significant others. Many people use road trips to attend sporting events for their favorite professional or collegiate teams or to watch their son or daughter play sports at their college or university. Road trips have been popular since cars were first invented. The invention of motor vehicles brought about a new form of transportation and people were able to branch out and travel anywhere they wanted to go. When cars were introduced in the United States, travel towards the western part of the country began to grow and the population did as well.

The first transcontinental road trip in the United States took place in 1903 by H. Nelson Jackson and Sewall Crocker. Their trip lasted a total of 63 days and it went from San Francisco to New York. It cost the pair $8, 000 for food, gasoline, tires, lodging, other supplies and the cost of the vehicle. They used a 1903 Winton Touring Car that was nicknamed 'Vermont' by Jackson.

The expansion of the highway system in the United States helped in the growth of road trips, especially ones that went from coast to coast. The development of Route 66 in 1926, which was finished towards the end of the 1930s, 'paved' the way for road tripping in the United States. Road tripping in the 1930s and 1940s was done to travel cross country for holidays or to simply move their residence out west.

The development of road trips brought about new businesses across the country. The hotel and motel industries skyrocketed because people that traveled cross country needed somewhere to stay when they were not driving to their destination. Hotels and motels along with restaurants began springing up everywhere along the major highways and byways of the country for travelers to take advantage of.

Going on a road trip or a cross country trip has become extremely popular today because of technology used in vehicles. There are now DVD players in cars, which can keep young children busy for hours, and some vehicles even install video game systems in cars for children to play. Traveling cross country in an RV has become popular as well. An RV is a roving home that many people use when going on vacation. You can sleep, eat, shower, and use the toilet in an RV; which allows for continuous travel without stopping too often. This makes the trip quicker. Cross country road tripping is a popular hobby today that continues to grow in popularity with each passing day.
